Aimhigher Boys into Higher Education Project
Posted September 25, 2007 by Julie Eccles
Male under-representation in HE has attracted increasing attention in recent times. A glance through the newspapers, or a scroll through online sources, is met by claims that ‘failing boys put university drive in doubt’ and ‘concerns as boys shun university’. HE application figures for the East Midlands confirm that this region is experiencing the same trend. In 2004/05, 45.7% of HE applicants from the East Midlands were male. Moreover, at 47% the comparable figure for 2001/02 reveals this gap to be a growing one. Such gender disparity is also evident in various Aimhigher events. It is against this backdrop that Aimhigher East Midlands has established the Boys into HE Programme.
This consists of three principle components:
- to undertake research into barriers preventing progression and identify practical solutions for overcoming these
- to compile a national repository of good practice case studies that have successfully engaged with boys and raised their educational aspirations
- to contribute directly to good practice by funding nine innovative projects throughout the East Midlands
Guided by the regional Boys into HE Group, this programme will be overseen by Aimhigher Projects Manager, Neil Raven.
